5 Minute Video Presentation
If you haven't yet seen our video or would like to see it again, just click on the white arrow in the middle of the image and it will begin to play. It is a brief presentation of our ministry and the need for more workers in Spain.

Summer Camps & Family Retreat
Each summer Becky and I look forward to working in the different camp ministry opportunities. This year we worked in children’s camp and youth camp; and we had kids from our church in junior camp. As always there were a number of children and young people saved.

The first family retreat was held during the third week of August. We had a total of 90 campers from 15 different churches throughout Spain. I chose for our theme: “Exceeding Great and Precious Promises” (in Spanish on the sign above our heads). The whole retreat was structured around ten of God’s promises. I used the missionaries and pastors to teach or preach on these divine promises to the believer. Overall the speakers did an incredible job of communicating the truth and relevance of each of these promises. At the close of the week, Gastón Salazar, a young married man from Bill Williams’ church, surrendered to preach. Amen! He is already an excellent student in our Bible institute. Thank you for praying and helping to make the week a success.

This year Bill Williams headed up the Bible verse memorization. Here he is giving certificates to the ten adults who memorized the verses that had to do with each of the ten promises of God that were emphasized during camp. Besides enjoying all the other activities, these adults learned all 26 verses in just three days.

For an adult handicraft Becky taught 22 ladies how to make a simple floral arrangement. Several of them commented afterward that they were going to try their hand at making floral arrangements for their churches. Becky has been doing this for our church for years.

Baptismal Service
On July 18th our church celebrated a joint baptismal service with the Baptist Church of Leganes founded and pastored by fellow missionary Bill Williams. In the photo I am actually standing on the baptistery as it is built into the platform to save space.

I baptized the two Spanish sisters, María and Paqui Gómez, that were mentioned in our last prayer letter who were saved earlier this year and are doing a discipleship class on Christian living with my wife.

Harry Garris (on the far left) who is preparing to become the pastor of the church in Leganes, baptized the two men in the center of the photo into the fellowship of their church.
At the close of the service Bill Williams offered a prayer for them and for the two ladies I had just baptized.

Because ours is the only church on the southwest side of Madrid with a baptistery, we make it available to sister churches in Madrid and Leganes and to new mission churches that have been started in Parla and Toledo. What a blessing to see new believers following the Lord’s example and command to be baptized by immersion.

Interesting Week
Monday, August 9, started on the wrong foot as my modem-router went on the blink. After spending a couple of hours trying to get it to work properly, I gave up and called the company as the modem was purchased in January of this year. No problem, it would be picked up this week and later I would receive another one. The week went by without receiving the mailing slip via email, when all of a sudden it came on Friday evening and then DHL picked up the modem about 6:30 PM. The old modem that we are using in the meantime drops the internet connection frequently. Sometimes it will work for several hours and sometime only work for several minutes! We will sure be glad to get the other modem back. What a headache!

Late Monday night I received an email alert from my credit card for a $28.21 purchase that I didn't recognize. The next morning I had another alert this time for the amount of $22.72. I immediately called the credit card company and discovered that both purchases were made in the orient and that another purchase for over $700 had been denied as fraud was suspected. My account was immediately canceled and the amount of those purchases was credited to my account bringing it back to a balance of zero. I use my card very little, so I am not sure how my information was hacked and sold, but it was! If it weren't for the alerts which are offered as a free service by all of the financial institutions, I might not have known of the fraudulent purchases for several days and may have been stuck with paying for them. This week I made sure that all of my credit and debit cards have alerts activated.

Then on Wednesday night I enrolled in Medicare! There are certain milestones in your life that you don't relish and signing up for Medicare is one of them. After spending some time on internet exploring my options as I will celebrate my 65th birthday in October, I decided to just call the Social Security Administration. The lady who took the call was very helpful in explaining my options and giving me advice concerning the drawing of my retirement funds. It also turns out that she had lived in Spain back in the 1980s when her husband was stationed at the Torrejon Air Force Base on the NE side of Madrid. Before anybody jumps the gun, I am not planning on retiring yet, there is still work to do here in Spain. What I plan to do is to start drawing my retirement in January while there are still funds to draw from! The extra income will be a big help to us as our economic situation is still a little shaky because of the weak dollar.

While all of this was going on, I was also trying to organize everything for a Family Retreat starting this week. Fortunately I have a lot of help, but I am the overall director of the Retreat and have to get everything planned and organized. The pieces are all falling into place and we should be ready to start on time Tuesday with lunch. Camp lasts until Saturday morning after breakfast when Good-byes are said and the 90 campers depart for the far corners of Spain. Pray for our week of retreat that families will be challenged and edified in the Lord and His Word. (See article above for the results of the Family Retreat.)

Relief Amidst Economic Turmoil

euro-coins-and-banknotes.jpgMost of you are aware of the economic crisis that has severely affected missionary work around the world as the American dollar suffered continual devaluation over the last four or five years. Appeals were sent out and many churches have responded by increasing monthly support or by giving a one-time special offering to help keep their missionaries on the field. Given the current economic situation of unparalleled spending and debt in the United States, I would have thought that the dollar would be in even worse shape. However, relief has come at least for us European missionaries, from a very unexpected source: the crisis of the euro. Less than a year ago it was being touted as the strongest currency in the world with talk of its replacing the American dollar as the universal currency.

euro_symbol.jpgThen Greece found itself in bankruptcy. And Spain who was one of the first countries to "promise" money to help bailout Greece, has been told by both the IMF and European Union to get its own deficit under control. While the government is passing austerity measures to reduce its defiict, the unions have already staged one general strike and there will be more before summer is over. To make fiscal matters worse unemployment in Spain continues at 20%.

Once you factor in other countries like Portugal, Italy and Ireland who are in similar circumstances to Spain, the inevitable result has been the fall of the once mighty euro! We missionaries are having a hard time believing that the dollar has recovered so much against the euro. In fact, the current exchange value has not been this good in the last four years. We don’t know how long this situation will last, but we thank the Lord for the economic relief that He has given to many of us missionaries.
